You cannot successfully lift a weight designed for your shoulders if you do not stand or squat in the proper position. Trying to balance yourself to meet the need of this weight makes your whole body exert effort, thus requiring overall muscle exertion. Machines may possibly take away some precious movement from you because it carries and supports you at a time when you could do it yourself.
